The Theia Institute recently had the privilege of meeting with a delegation of Brazilian election officials through the U.S. State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) — a flagship professional exchange that connects emerging international leaders with their American counterparts.

The conversation focused on electoral innovation, technology, and democratic governance — areas where the United States and Brazil face many of the same questions. How do you modernize electoral systems while preserving public trust? How do emerging technologies, including AI, strengthen rather than undermine democratic institutions? What does responsible innovation look like when the stakes are the integrity of an election?

These are not abstract concerns. They are the day-to-day realities facing election officials in every democracy, and they sit squarely at the intersection of technology and governance that defines Theia’s work.
